Reading Initiative
Promoting Reading Through Bhutanese Stories
At Bhutan Corner, we believe that stories can help children develop imagination, empathy, curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love for reading. Through our Reading Initiative, we hope to encourage meaningful reading experiences for children while sharing Bhutanese values, culture, traditions, and everyday life through relatable stories.
Our collection of Bhutanese children’s books was created to support reading beyond textbooks by offering stories that children can emotionally and culturally connect with. Themes such as kindness, gratitude, perseverance, honesty, friendship, family, and cultural identity are woven naturally into the stories in ways that are engaging and age-appropriate for young readers.
Several of our books have been reviewed by teachers and recommended as supplementary readers for primary school students. The stories are already being used in classroom reading sessions and learning activities, helping children connect reading with both enjoyment and reflection.
Encouraging Reading Culture in Bhutan
Reading plays an important role in helping children develop language skills, creativity, emotional understanding, and critical thinking. However, many schools and libraries have limited access to engaging supplementary reading materials that reflect local culture and familiar experiences.
Through this initiative, we hope to:
- Encourage reading for pleasure among children
- Support classroom and library reading activities
- Share Bhutanese stories and values with young readers
- Promote cultural storytelling and creativity
- Make meaningful reading materials more accessible to schools and families
Our long-term vision is to help nurture a stronger reading culture through stories that children can genuinely relate to and enjoy.
Free Classroom Reading Resources
As part of our commitment to accessibility and learning, selected stories and activity materials are available free online for students, teachers, parents, and readers around the world.
These resources include:
- Classroom reading versions of selected books
- Student activity materials

Meaningful Cultural Support in Bhutan
Many visitors to Bhutan look for meaningful and authentic ways to connect with the country beyond sightseeing. Supporting reading initiatives and Bhutanese children’s literature is one small way to contribute towards education, storytelling, and cultural preservation in a thoughtful and respectful manner.
Rather than focusing on short-term or intrusive activities, our approach is centered around supporting long-term reading culture through books, classroom reading resources, and educational storytelling.
Support may include:
- Sponsoring classroom reading sets
- Supporting school and library collections
- Helping expand free reading resources
- Sharing Bhutanese stories with wider audiences
- Partnering with literacy and educational initiatives
In selected cases, small reading-based cultural exchange activities may also be organised in respectful coordination with schools and local communities.
Bhutanese Stories for Global Readers
While these stories are rooted in Bhutanese culture and values, many of the themes are universal and relatable to children everywhere. Through both printed books and free online resources, we hope to make Bhutanese storytelling accessible to readers, educators, families, and schools around the world.
Our goal is not only to encourage reading among children in Bhutan, but also to share stories that reflect compassion, simplicity, mindfulness, and human connection with a wider global audience.
For Schools, Libraries, Educators, and Partners
We welcome conversations with schools, libraries, educators, organisations, travellers, and individuals interested in promoting reading culture and supporting meaningful educational initiatives in Bhutan.
If you would like to collaborate, support the initiative, or learn more, we would be happy to hear from you.
Together, we hope to help bring more stories, imagination, creativity, and meaningful reading experiences to children in Bhutan and beyond.
